Linen, It Keeps You Cool

Linen, It Keeps You Cool

Posted by E Nadler on 1st Aug 2023

Linen is one of the oldest textiles known to date, much older than the cotton or synthetic fibers we find so often in our modern clothes. The weave is derived from the flax plant - yes the same one that goes in your morning smoothies - which makes it ideal for hot and humid conditions. The fabric feels cool to the touch, conducts heat away from your body, and most importantly to me, is lint-free. Today, we are going to dive into the lovely life of linen. . .

The linen fabric dates back to over 30,000 years ago where it was first used in modern-day Georgia. While our collection and weaving methods have modernized over time, linen still remains a natural fabric heavily rooted in tradition. The flax plant is often hand-harvested or cut very close to the ground to provide the longest material possible. The stalk of the flax plant is broken down through several hands-on processes to create the final linen fiber. Of course, modern machines help us with the dynamic process a bit, however, as always, the best quality items come from our human touch.

Historically, production was mostly seen in Western and Eastern European countries, particularly Ukraine where quality flax can be grown en masse. But, today linen is one of the most widely used textiles across the globe. Top producers of linen nowadays are China and even India. This fabric spans the globe, wrapping us all in its gentle embrace.

We love linen; it’s clean, comfortable, and versatile. During these hotter summer months, linen is a necessity to keep cool in hot and humid weather by allowing our skin to breathe. Due to the way the garment is weaved, as well as the natural properties of the flax plant itself, linen allows air to pass through and keep us relieved from oppressive temperatures. So, stop on by Lines of Designs to get an in-depth look at our linen products and find another twist to beat the heat.
